How Middle School Golf Mastered the Fairway

By Ava Brantley

The East Wake Academy co-ed middle school golf team finished their season with a 5-2 record. Eighth-grader Garret Hicks thought their season was “very memorable” because of how much they improved from last season when they did not win a match, he said.

One of the best things about playing golf is that you get to play on nice courses, like South Granville Country Club, where the team played their best match. “It was exciting because everyone shot good scores at the match, not just one player,” he added.

The coach, Jason Hurt is much appreciated by the players because of the assets he added to this season’s team, said Kayden Shirley, a returning golfer. Shirley, with an average score of 39.1, said the team “worked at practices,” which “prepared them” for matches, adding the players worked to implement the tools that Coach Hurt taught them to use during the matches. She said it helped to fix their “flaws.”

Seventh grader Harper Hurt, who is coached by her dad, knew their determination on the course was worth it after the last match because it showed how much they “improved”  from the first match. “We won by so much, compared to the first match, because we stuck with it,” Hurt joyfully reminisced.
